A Mindful Month : July 2019

So June was a bit crazy! That seems to be the general theme of this year for me personally. Each month introduces a new monkey to the zoo that is my life and I’m really in the mood for new animals! Some diversity you know? So July for me is really going to be about figuring out who is she in the zoo and how we gonna work for the rest of the year.

Mantra– “YOU GOT THIS” encouragement and empowerment are forming to be key pillars in how I manage or tackle things these days. All I need is to be reminded that I hold the power to help me navigate myself out of the circumstance I’m in. I’ve realised and more importantly truly believe that I am able to fix and heal myself and that the darkness is just part of the process.

aha! Moment – Sometimes I’m The Problem.  I think this realisation has brought me a peace I really needed and has opened my mind and heart to understanding and forgiveness , of myself and others. Here is the thing Distinguished, YOU CAN BE THE PROBLEM. I, regrettably, had to lose a few friends to learn this. Learning this also brought things to the surface that I am currently making decisions on, BUT I am very aware that my words & actions made people in my life make a hard decision on whether they actually wanted ME to be in THEIRS. Something they are SO allowed to do. It’s not the most tasteful beverage to take down…. but it’s the truth. I have had to be humble and accept. Thats the tweet.

goal –Imma tell you that I’m so hesitant to write a goal down because being accountable to it is giving me anxiety. I have had a thing thrown at me from left field that always get in the damn way! BUT, I just signed up with a life coach, he is also my uncle and deputy father and I’m both excited and scared. My goal this month is to give this new journey in self-dev a good honest try.

dream – Is to officially launch a product, campaign and event under the LOCHNATON brand. Watch this and many other spaces. Ask me about it please because ” I tend to forget”.

butternut, sausage & spinach soup

butternut, sausage & spinach soup

Repeat after me : “Winter season is SOUP SZN!” . Here is a hearty, delicious twist to butternut soup which is already a decadent soup on its own.

  • 1 pack country style sausage
  • 3 cups spinach
  • 1 Butternut squash, whole
  • 2 heads Garlic
  • 1/4 tsp each of your face dried herbs and spices
  • 2 cups Chicken broth, Homemade, Or Low-sodium
  • 1 Salt and pepper
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 cup Heavy cream
  • 1 cheddar cheese

here’s how you make it :

  • Fry the sausage in a pan until cooked all the way through.
  • Once done, free the yummy chunks from their confinement and chop it up into chunks to put to the side
  • Next, preheat your oven to 220 degrees Celsius.
  • Cut your butternut squash in half and clear out the pockets of its innards
  • Cut off the bases of your garlic cloves and place them in the emptied pockets of the butternut
  • Lace the butternut and garlic with EVOO and a sprinkle of salt and pepper and place in the oven for 45 mins
  • Chop and clean your spinach ad set to the side.
  • Once the butternut is ready you are gonna scoop up the soft flesh with a spoon and place in your processor/blender.
  • The garlic gets to join the party too! You will squeeze the bulbs out of their shells easily into the mix. They have softened during their time in the oven.
  • Add your chicken stock, cheese and mixed herbs & spices to the mix, blend/ process the ingredients until smooth
  • Pour the mixture into a pot over medium heat and proceed to add your chopped spinach, sausage and cream

Fold in the sausage, spinach and cream and leave to simmer until the spinach has cooked to your desire!

a mindful month-end : June 2019

at the end of last week I was making a plan to catch up with friends I haven’t seen in a while and check in with my doctors for check ups , check ins and unfulfilled appointments. Little did I know on Sunday afternoon I would receive a call that a long time friend who also happens to be a great friend’s husband, had passed on and the very next day I would be rushed to hospital from where we had gathered to pay respects to the family and start grieving our loss. As I lay in this here hospital bed , I am aware of the loss, the gravity of the proximity to it . But I haven’t started to really feel it. I know what has happened but it feels like its above me. All I care or can think to do is find the best way to be there for my friend , to continue to hold on to the great memories I shared with our friend, her husband, and to leave this hospital and do EVERYTHING I need to do to not return the same way I arrived.

attitude : GRATITUDE, I realise I am living on the prayer and positive thoughts & actions from so many people. a great many I don’t even know personally. This does not go unnoticed I am so humbled and appreciative because it is possibly your energy and good intentions upon my life that the gods use to continue to offer me chances in this life. Thank you Distinguished.

Luxury – Breathing. That and this new craving I have for sweet treats.

Oh Snap : We are now the adults in the room. This month alone I have watched a friend start a life with his new parter and some of the adult that comes with that, the other day my other friend lost a partner and now we are about to get in with all that brings. I go to the Dr with my parents , I sign my own consent forms. The doctor asks me a huge question and my parents look back at me and say ” Well…It’s up to you” and it’s not manipulation, they mean it sincerely. HOW DID WE GET HERE!!!?

Focus : Therapy, Rest and Healing. I need all these things to show up for myself and I really want to show up for my friend. I love you Rumbi. This is you, you got this. But, WE GOT YOU.

Ok! Ok! so we back to some kind of rhythm. By rhythm I mean getting out of bed, getting out the house , going to work, seeing people…getting back to self. last ‘month’ was bumpy to say the least but guest what? I actually managed to squash 85% of a list I made 2 months ago and progress is slow but it’s being made.

June is upon us. It’s almost halftime! Imma be very honest and tell you that 2019 has already been long and it’s either 2020 starts today or 2019 re-start.

Mantra– ”What do we say to the gods of death. NOT TODAY!”. Maaaan, it’s so easy to be thrown off of progress or have your day ruined in one fell swoop because the devil is busy. ZfwbpIt’s especially difficult when you are trying to reset and when you live in Zimbabwe . The other day I tweeted …..” These days asking the question ” How are you?” is a trigger” and a lot of people resonated with that . It’s hard to say how you are because there are so many things going wrong or not working to make being ok and positive possible. The devil is busy my distinguished. But where and when we can we need to let him know ‘ NOT TODAY. We not having it.

affirmation – “You Are Loved! ”. It’s become so important to me to remind myself to trust that the people who say and practice love to me do so willingingly and unconditionally….the same way I love them. That means I can talk to them about how I feel, what I think and what I want and know that it will be appreciated and acknowledged.

More good days in June!

goal – Get back to working out regularly. Just the thought makes me tayad. But I bought some new gear so I’m excited to wear them. Now to work out in them!

My everyday luxury this month – a healthy home cooked meal! I really don’t know how I will manage this with the current load shedding but i will at least try to make myself something warm and yummy everyday. Nothing says “ I love you” like food 🙂

Vision – Getting started on a social entrepreneurial project I’ve been dreaming up! Stay tuned…

If you’re following me on Instagram and watch my stories (which I hope you are!) then you’ve probably seen my workouts.( if not you can find the work under the SWEAT highlight) I often do a time lapse video that I share in fast motion so you all can get a glimpse into my workout routine. I have gotten tons and tons of questions about my workouts that I try to answer as I get, but I figured it would be best to talk all about my workout routine, what I do, the equipment I use, and some FAQs all in one place. That way it’s easy to look back on and share with you all!

This is Paul. Yeah… I know. Makes you believe don’t it?

You all have probably seen this guy Paul in my weekly workout stories . His brand and Instagram name is Paul B (@theneroeff3ct) but don’t let that fool you. Don’t let the image above scare or intimidate you his workouts are for people of all shapes, sizes, backgrounds, and professions. Infact looking at how he works and takes care of himself was motivation and inspiration for me. I knew I was dealing with someone who knew what they were talmbout ! Most importantly someone who would help me meet my goals.

Paul first approached me more than a year ago offering to train me and your girl was not serious about the things! But guess what got serious? Life! My already diagnosed depression had elevated to severe and this was in addition to my already alive and well premenstrual dysphoric disorder ( PMDD) . It was literally do better or die in terms of my mental health and I knew that one of the biggest and most important lifestyle changes I needed to make was to take care of my body so it can help me take care of my mind.

I called Paul.

Before , Sept 2018. I was bloated mmmkay!

I started working with Paul shortly after a really open and honest phone call. The basics was, I was depressed and I needed help in getting my body moving and working for me. We didn’t discuss a target weight the focus was on how I would feel. Tracking my feelings instead of pounds is something that changed the game for me. We all been there right? Where you try exercise, eat right and the weight don’t go nowhere! I started with Paul officially at the start of September 2018 I’ve gone to him or done his workouts at home on and off since then. The first 5 months are the times I was the most consistent and pushed myself the most and in turn, seen the biggest results. I’ve lost 10 kgs and have kept it off. Starting this June I am progressing more towards my personal goal of having a strong, thick , long and lean body that is fit and toned, without being bulky. I enjoy the workouts and don’t get bored doing them because there is an endless combination of moves and order in which I can do them. I am 100% sticking to his method and can’t wait to continue to see results!

I’ve rounded up a bunch of FAQs I get about my workouts that I post including a bunch that you all submitted in one of my question boxes on stories. If your question isn’t answered below feel free to leave a comment, DM me, or e-mail me and I’ll answer it + add the question below. They aren’t in any real order, as I just added them in and answered them as I got the questions in!

How long are your workouts?

I generally try to workout for no longer than 45 mins.

How many different workouts do you do?

The individual moves are sort of endless. There are tons of different ways to do them. I combine them into different sets each time so my workouts are always different! This helps me not get bored.

Do you follow a nutrition program along with his workouts?

I ate clean…. a mostly plant based diet with recipes I saw online! If you continue to follow the blog you will see all the recipes I actually played around with.

Do you do any other cardio outside of the workouts you post?

Nope. But I started adding yoga the closer we got to -10kgs.

Have you always been a morning workout person?

Yes! On good days ofcourse

What gives you motivation?

I’m going to work on a full blog post about staying motivated to workout, but really it is the biggest depression and anxiety relief for me. It’s my time for myself to do something for my body, to push myself, and to make improvements.

Have you noticed a difference in your body?

Absolutely! Your girl is developing abdominal muscles 🙂

Do you work out every day?

No. 3-5/weeek depending on how I am feeling

Do you do a Paul workout every day you workout?

I swear by it.

Are your workouts always full body or are some days focused on individual body groups?

Paul’s workouts are full body workouts that work all areas of your body. I don’t do a specific ‘arm’ or ‘leg’ day when I workout.

Is his workout plan and consultation worth the money?

Yes boo!

Zucchini Pasta with Chicken & Bacon in Cauliflower Alfredo Sauce.

Zucchini Pasta with Chicken & Bacon in Cauliflower Alfredo Sauce.

There are a few things more comforting than a bowl of yummy pasta during the winter months. It’s really all about full belly warmth and all round saucy deliciousness. This is why you should try this 🙂

here’s what you will need :

a couple huge zucchini…
zucchini, mushroom, bacon bits, chicken breast

Zucchini Pasta with Chicken , Mushroom and Bacon

  • 3 large zucchinis, ends trimmed
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more to taste
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper, plus more to taste
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Chopped fresh parsley, plus more for serving
  • 125g button mushroom
  • 250g bacon bits / chopped bacon shoulder

Cauliflower Sauce

  • 1 medium head Cauliflower
  • 1 tbsp Garlic
  • 1 tbsp Parsley
  • 1/2 cup Yellow onion
  • 4 cups Chicken broth, low-sodium
  • 1/4 cup Reserved broth
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper
  • 1/3 cup Parmesan/romano cheese mix
  • 1/8 tsp Red pepper flakes
  • 1/2 tsp Sea salt

here’s how you make it :

Chicken tittays sliced and diced tin whichever way you please!
  1. Using a spiralizer, mandoline, or vegetable peeler, turn the zucchini into thin or thick noodles ribbons . Microwave the noodles for 1-2 minutes, then drain any liquid.
  2. Slice and dice your chicken tittays to your liking , I opted for strips. You could cube or chunk it up as you wish .

5. Melt the butter in a large pan over medium heat. Add the chicken, bacon bits, salt, pepper, and garlic and cook until the garlic is beginning to brown and chicken and bacon is cooked through, about 7 minutes. Add in your mushroom and zucchini ribbons and toss it together.

  • Now its time for the sauce! Combine all your cauliflower sauce ingredients . ( steam broccoli before this) Blend together until smooth and to your desired thickness.
  • Pour that deliciousness into your pasta pan and toss till evenly covered and dripping in sauce
  • Sprinkle the rest of your cheese and parsley and we ready!
